The Office of Youth Services and Community Affairs will host "Bridging Gaps, Uniting Neighborhoods," a neighborhood conference that will be held at Memphis Cook Convention Center on Saturday, February 9, 2008. The opening keynote address will be delivered by Sara L. Lewis, veteran educator and current Special Assistant to the Mayor in the City of Memphis' Office of Youth Services and Community Affairs. Internationally acclaimed activist, Nontumbi Naomi Tutu, daughter of Bishop Desmond Tutu, will address the conferees during the noon plenary session.
The conference's steering committee, which is comprised of neighborhood representatives throughout Memphis, is pre-registering 300 conferees, of which 100 will be youth between the ages of 10-18 years old. Conference organizers say the conference will serve as a catalyst to help close the gaps between Memphis' under-served and affluent neighborhoods. All neighborhoods will have an opportunity to unite in capacity building efforts and share and learn best practices. Just as important, the conference will serve as a forum for this City's next generation of neighbors-its youths-to discuss and learn the importance of taking ownership for their neighborhoods and of being good neighbors.
