Monday, January 21, 2008 will be the 22nd national King Holiday, a Day of Service in remembrance of Dr. King’s lifelong commitment to his fellow man. This year, Volunteer Memphis/Hands On Memphis will host the 8th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Summit on Service, a series of events designed to serve as a starting point for meaningful volunteer action and community engagement. Projects will last from 9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on January 21. Attached you will find additional information and the application for volunteers.
Below you will find examples of projects for community-based organizations to reduce problem properties. Neighborhood Associations and CDCs: Volunteers can create and distribute door hangers with information on community resources, recycling, environmental tips or violence prevention. Organize groups of volunteers to cleanup vacant lots or paint a mural.
If you need assistance completing the proposal, please let me know. Also, please inform Christin (creeder@memphis.edu) or Olliette (odrobot@mcdpinfo.org) if you decide to do a project. We would like to include your community project information on the Problem Properties Collaborative blog. In addition, we want to post pictures of your neighborhood event on the blog.
